Finding the right laptop means evaluating your needs and price range. It also requires wading through the sea of features that are available.
You want a fast processor, a decent amount of memory, and a battery that can last through the day. 256GB of storage is enough for most users, though power users and content creators will want more.
What You Need
A laptop is a big investment, and it should meet all of your requirements. To make sure that a laptop will do everything you need, first consider what you’ll use it for and how often.
For example, if you’ll be doing lots of multimedia editing or high-resolution gaming, you’ll need a laptop with a high refresh rate display and a good graphics card. But if you’re a casual user, you probably won’t need to buy an upgraded video card — the standard on-board graphics built into any laptop will be plenty for most purposes.
Another important factor is the type of processor and storage that you need. A fast CPU is responsible for visible performance differences, and RAM (random access memory) determines how quickly your computer can handle multiple tasks at once. For storage, consider whether you want a traditional hard drive or a faster solid-state drive. You’ll also need to decide which ports and connectivity options are most important to you. Consider the type of USB ports that you need and the presence of a headphone jack, Ethernet port, HDMI port and more.
Budget
It’s not hard to find laptops that will suit a variety of needs for under $500, especially with the proliferation of budget Chromebooks and affordable Windows PCs. These machines are well suited for surfing the web, using productivity software, and even gaming in moderation.
It’s worth aiming for at least 8GB of RAM in any laptop, particularly if you’re shopping on a budget. It’s possible to find cheaper models with 4GB, but they’ll be sluggish in most apps.
Consider going for a model with a solid-state drive (SSD), which are much faster than traditional hard drives. But if you’re on a tight budget, it’s OK to opt for eMMC or flash memory instead. Most manufacturers list the full price of every configuration on their websites, but you can find laptops with the same features and specs for significantly less elsewhere.
Platform
Whether you’re typing a research paper, doing video production or playing the latest PC games, a laptop gives you the freedom to work and play anywhere. But with so many options for laptops on the market, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you.
For some, this may come down to existing loyalty to a particular platform, such as Windows, ChromeOS or MacOS (Macbooks only). However, for most people it comes down to what kind of software and games they want to use and whether those require high-spec hardware. You’ll also want to make sure that whatever OS you choose has adequate storage space for the files you need. These days, this is usually a solid-state drive (SSD) rather than an old-fashioned hard disk drive.
Design
The laptop design incorporates the input and output capabilities of a desktop computer into a portable device. It typically features a display screen (typically 11-17 in or 280-430 mm in diagonal size), speakers, keyboard, and pointing devices (such as touchpads or trackpads). Hardware specifications may vary significantly between laptop types, models, and price points. Laptops are generally portable and consume less power than desktop computers, but they lack upgradeability because most components are soldered to the motherboard.
The College of Design Laptop program encourages and makes more accessible student ownership and operation of a correctly configured laptop computer for their undergraduate or graduate program. This includes access to technology support, commonly used software in their field of study, and a repayment plan for the cost of the machine over three academic years.
Students can choose between the Dell or MacBook Pro model as a platform for their laptop. The college recommends that you choose a model with the specific requirements needed for your UI/UX design work. If you’re planning to use this laptop for other purposes outside your major, we recommend a more modest model.
Portability
The primary reason to choose a laptop over a desktop PC is portability. Most laptops weigh under two pounds and can be carried easily from place to place. They come with a built-in battery and can work offline from their power supply, which is a great feature in areas prone to power surges or blackouts.
Laptops incorporate all the input and output functions of a PC, including a display screen, keyboard, speakers, data storage, disc drives and pointing device (touchpad or trackpad) into one compact package. New models also include detachable displays that function as tablets when not in use.
The most common sizes for laptops range from 11″ to 17″. Smaller machines are often marketed as netbooks or subnotebooks, while larger machines are known as notebook computers. The components inside a laptop are tightly integrated to save space. This helps to keep the machine light and portable, but it also prevents the user from upgrading parts like the processor or memory. In most cases, opening the laptop chassis voids the warranty. This makes modding a laptop very difficult.
